Sunspot Road Mania - Episode 7

Here's the new Road Mania podcast from the NUNA show at the High Noon Saloon last night. It was really loud in the venue and people are a little intoxicated, but the sound is still pretty good and there's some great moments.

You can click on the title of this post to download it, if you aren't subscribed on iPodder or the new iTunes with podcasting feeds built-in.

You mofos are beautiful!

That's one of my favorite pics from Saturday night.

Here's the rest of the pics from Saturday's Annex show.

What an awesome show! Thanks so much, let's party hard again in July!

That Was Weird

I was listening to Moby's Play on somebody's shared iTunes folder here and when it came to the last song, "My Weakness", I all of a sudden started to feel really sad, like crying sad. And I couldn't figure out why.

Until I realized that this was the music that was playing in The X-Files episode when Mulder finally finds out what happens to his sister.

Funny that just the music evoked an emotional memory that my conscious mind didn't remember.

Man, I miss The X-Files. When that show was on, it was ON.

Pittsburgh Article on Resurrected Dogs

Looks like the zombie dog story is real. Not really scary, though. It's explains what the research was about in the first place, what their intentions were, and how it might one day be used to save lives, not create crazed flesh-eaters.

Going out tonight?

Our friends in NUNA are playing at the High Noon Saloon tonight. We played with them at the Thoughts for Food festival in Racine back in March.

Anyway, I'll probably make it down to check them out. It should be fun and the High Noon is always a good time.

I'm listening to the new Gorillaz disc on my iPod today and ummmm... it kinda sucks. I'm glad I stole it. Fuckin' Eurotrash cartoons.

Attack of the Hemadrones

Is it just me or is the news lately just one sci-fi plot after another?

This guy says he was on the run from flesh-eating aliens when he hit a UPS truck. That's right, here's a quote:

"Everything had to do with his escape from the hemadrones," said Nevada County District Attorney Michael Ferguson. "According to the defendant, he was afraid they were going to put him in cargo and ship him to China to be eaten."

Ship him to China? Are the hemadrones intergalactic capitalists who are just trying to get in on the Soylent Green market in the burgeoning Chinese economy?

I gotta listen to Coast to Coast tonight. You know it's gonna be good.

Test

I got a new phone! It rules.

Resident Evil For Real

Scientists bring dead dogs back to life! Using a special saline solution, they're able to freeze the dogs' tissue and bring it back after a few hours (they say) without brain or tissue damage. Zombie dogs? Whoa.

Read the article and see what you think. I'd never heard the term, "boffins", before as a reference to scientists.

This story reminds me of the Zombism in Cambodia April Fool's Day joke from earlier this year. That was a great freaky story. And it's funny that this research takes place in Pittsburgh (the same place where the new zombie flick, Land of the Dead takes place (the climax of the film occurs on Mount Washington and check out this cool pic of us there. Also, this page from the same night has some pics of us at the cemetery where they filmed the original Night of the Living Dead.) Except this article looks like it actually might be true and that this research could save a lot of people's lives.

I was just telling some friends this weekend how cool it would be to be frozen and awakened in the future. A lot of people think that's lame, but I dunno, why would you turn a chance down to see the future? That sounds awesome to me.

I'm an idiot

I was gonna do the podcast from the afterbar party on Saturday night/Sunday morning. I completely forgot about it, though. We had a great time and thank God I didn't soil myself.

We'll do a podcast on the way to the Cities this weekend, though.

We've got a lot of great pictures from the Annex show on Saturday. It was an awesome night, Bound to Change and Wax Machine both played excellent sets and it was good to see so many of our friends out, about, and ready to get buck wild. I'll get those up in the next coupla days.

Our next Madison show will be July 22nd at The Slipper Club downtown. If it's anything like Saturday night, I'm gonna hafta get some life insurance.

Cynergy 67 in Madison Tonight

First of all, judging from the monitors in the TV studio, the camera really does add ten pounds. They said they can digitally make me more ruggedly handsome in post-production, though. It was actually in the same studio we were at when we did the NBC 15 morning show in April. I guess they're owned by the same company. They do a good job, though, you can't tell it's the same place.

Alright, I'm gonna finish up some writing for Max Ink and then it's off to the movies. I'm thinking about seeing our cyborg pals in Cynergy 67 tonight. They're great guys and they have a killer stage show. Also up is Flat Atom who are remarkably friendly and fun headbangers. So, if you're into industrial or metal, check out The Klinic tonight. You might see me, if the zombies don't get me first.

Watch WB57 News Tonight!

Wendy and I are headed to the TV studio to tape the "Friday Night Jam" section of the WB57 Nine O'Clock News for tonight. If you're by a TV at 9, make sure you check it out. Ben won't be appearing with us, so we'll be doing a couple of acoustic tracks. It should be fun.

And if you have a chance, contact the station and thank them for supporting local and independent music. You'd be surprised what excitement a little viewer feedback can generate and media outlets need to know that their audience is interested in artists outside the same Top 40 and mainstream bullshit.

Land of the Dead

I'm looking forward to seeing Land of the Dead tonight. When I was six years old, my dad and my sister were watching Night of the Living Dead on TV late one night, I saw parts of it and it terrified me. It gave me nightmares worse than any other film I'd ever seen. When Day of the Dead came out in 1985, I used to leave the room when the commercials came on. I remember, I would watch Mork and Mindy everyday on Channel 24 and one day they showed an ad for it. I knew that they had the same ads at the same time almost every day, so I'd head to my room when I knew the commercial break was coming, but I could still hear the ad in the background.

Whenever we'd go somewhere, I'd think about ways that the place would be defensible if and when the dead decided to rise from the grave and start eating the living.

I had zombie nightmares for years, but one day they subsided. (That's a cool story in it's own right that I'll tell sometime.) Now, when I realize I'm having a nightmare, I think to myself, "Well, it's about time to get attacked by zombies." and then it happens in the dream, it's more of a "going through the motions" than an actual terrifying experience (I had a cool one a few months back, though, where I was beheading zombies with a giant spoon.)

Anyway, I gotta check out the new flick. George Romero gave me a zillion night terrors, I figure I owe him my $8.50.

All You Can Drink!

Our friends in PINE (we were with them at Frienz in Middleton last month) are playing at The Annex tonight. It's the return of $10-All-You-Can-Drink. Fuck yeah! Wendy and I (I think Captain Caveman is coming too) are going down tonight to do some dress rehearsal partying for Saturday's show.

If anyone wants to come, gimme a call or email or just meet us down there.

"Does this look like a man who's had all he can drink?" (apologies to The Simpsons)

Congress Wastes Our Time...

...with another flag-burning amendment.

You realize that it's our money that pays these assholes?

Yes, the American flag is a powerful symbol. For free expression. If your feelings get so hurt every time somebody expresses a viewpoint you don't agree with that you have to make a law about it, it's time to get some backbone.

Look, I'm not the kinda guy to run around burning the flag. I know people have died for our country. Almost all of my male relatives have served. I understand that the American flag is supposed to represent the ideals and hopes that these men died for. I respect and am grateful for their sacrifice. I know how important symbolism is to the human mind. I was a fuckin' English major, fer Chrissakes. But I also know a feelgood summer bullshit law smokescreen when I see one. Is there some kind of crisis that this needed to be addressed immediately? Are flags being burned all over the country at an alarming rate?

I was hoping this Congress would be giving me the ability to invest some of my Social Security and working on ways to protect us from terrorists, but instead we're talking about changing the Constitution to bring up some poll numbers.

Argh. I'm getting pissed off now. I'm gonna go take a bath in some Nihilism.

Baby Born With Three Legs!

That's what the doctors originally thought when I was born. (Remember that line from Goldmember? "My lord! you're a tripod. What you been feedin' that thing, eh? Good thing is, if you ever get tired, you can use it as a kickstand!")

Okay, not really.

This girl in Detroit really was born with three legs. It was part of an underdeveloped twin. Freaky, kinda like The Dark Half. That was a sweet movie, probably the last good thing Timothy Hutton did after he broke up with Debra Winger.

Three legs doesn't mean two "no-no"s, though. You can't really tell from the pics, they've censored the naughty bits. The article woulda said something, I bet. Anyway, she'll probably grow up to be an awesome soccer player.

More Racine pics

More pics from Sunspot's performance at Racine Harborfest 2005.

I mean, there's a shit-ton of them.

Ya have to use the direct link to get there right now, though. Something happened to the galleries and the main http://www.lowerhell.com/sunspot page isn't showing the Out Of State and Other Shows In Wisconsin galleries for some reason. I'll have to ask Devious how I fucked that one up, ha.

Soul Asylum Bassist Passes Away

Karl Mueller, co-founder of Soul Asylum, is dead at 41 of throat cancer.

I was just thinking about this band because I watched the last five minutes of Clerks again on Saturday night (ya know, where he "Randalls" on out of the place.) And then the Soul Asylum tune ("Can't Even Tell (Theme From 'Clerks')") is the song that plays in the end. I think there's a video for it on the DVD, too. Soul Asylum plays hockey on the roof of the store with the rest of the guys.

I saw them play on their Let Your Dim Light Shine tour in 1995 (with Matthew Sweet, Victoria Williams, and The Jayhawks) and they put on a killer show. They're one of my favorite Minneapolis bands and The 400 Bar in the Cities has one of Soul Asylum's platinum records on their wall.

I just bought Grave Dancer's Union again used so I could put it on my iPod. He made some great music. My condolences go out to his family and band.

Family Guy Movie!

Yahoo's got a story on a Family Guy movie straight to DVD on September 27th!

The past couple of new Family Guy's have been more than excellent, especially the "You have AIDS" song from last week (That was probably one of their best bits ever)and the way they brought up Jake and the Fatman last night. Have college kids now even heard of that show? Or William Conrad? Yeah, he was a total lobarsh (sp? I think that's the Polish slang... I don't have time to look it up), but what a voice that dude had.

Ron Livingston is in the new movie too. Sweet. I used to work with his sister and I think she's still at the TV Sweatshop, Newschannel 8 in La Crosse. He's way up in my cool list for this one.

Racine Pics are Up!

Yesterday's show at Harborfest was awesome. We had a great time. It was cool jamming out to Lyden Moon. If you go today, make sure you go see The Dammitheads at 5:30.

I put the pics up on lowerhell.com but I think I fucked something up because the galleries aren't showing up. I uploaded a few to the Flickr stream, though, check it out:

Harborfest in Racine tonight!

I'm looking forward to Racine Harborfest this evening. We play from 6:30 until 8 on the Cool Cat's Cove stage, which, yes, features a cartoon cat wearing sunglasses and playing guitar... what's your point?

Anyway, this is a cool festival, the forecast is good, and it's gonna be a lot of fun. I say we all get wasted and go on the Gravitron. The admission is free between 4:30 and 6:30 tonight, so get there a little early, grab a beer, and come say hi.

Sunspot Road Mania - Episode 6

Here's the podcast from the recording studio today.

Sunspot Road Mania - Episode 6

Where are 2, 4, and 5 you ask? On their way! Wendy's putting them together. I just wanted to get this one out tonight because I'm still juiced up. No local indie music today, just a soundseeing tour of Smart Studios and various idiocy of us in the recording process.

Man, I'm tired now. I'm going to bed. Good night.

Pictures from Smart Studios recording today!

Here's a few shots from today's recording session. The

songs we were doing today will be on our next release,

but they'll also be available on Raw-Tracks.com. I'm

really excited for you guys to hear them, we worked

our asses off.

Once More Unto The Studio...

Fucking sweet, we're heading back to Smart in a coupla hours to start recording material for our next release. I think we'll try to get a soundseeing tour as well for the next podcast. We have a ton of ridiculous stuff from the van for the past coupla weeks that we'll put up as soon as we have a spare second.

I've been listening a lot to the new System of a Down a lot in the past couple of days. It took me a while to warm up to it, but there really are some great melodies on it. It's not nu-metal, thank God, but it's pretty good for mainstream hard rock right now.

Anyway, we'll write something later and let you know how the time in the studio went.

Actor from 'V' Dies...

Actor Lane Smith, who most people remember as Perry White from Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, but who I remember fondly from V: The Series and Son-in-Law died yesterday at 69.

He had the best new character of the ones created for the V series that weren't in the original mini-series. Nathan Bates was awesome and I've thought of him like that ever since because I loved that show. I've even watched other crap he was in to honor the great job he did on V, which was one of the coolest shows ever until it's ridiculous deus ex machina ending of The Final Battle. But it had some great moments in that first season and I thought that he had a lot to do with it. Man, when he had the wristwatch that was tuned to his pulse, and if it stopped (meaning he was killed), it would release all the canisters of red dust into the city of Los Angeles, now that was some cool plotting.

I could talk about V all day, but I got stuff to do.

Godspeed Lane and thank you for taking on the Visitors.

Winnie Cooper is a Braniac?!

I think every guy my age used to "like like" Winnie Cooper when they were just getting their short and curlys. I haven't seen an episode of The Wonder Years in a long time, but I was in sixth grade when it came out and I remember being just as enamored with Winnie as Fred "I Grew Into a Troll" Savage's character.

Winnie, however, is still a total babe.

Check out her site, she's got, like, papers on mathematics and stuff. H-O-T. From the description on the "Mathematics" section of the site (I'd link to it, but Flash is crap for linking):

As some of you already know, Danica took a hiatus from acting for college, and she graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics! While she was there, she even co-authored a math proof - new research proving an original math theorem - highly unusual for an undergraduate. In fact, she was the only undergraduate invited to speak at Rutgers University's biannual Statistical Mechanics conference a few years back.

WTF?! Winnie co-authored a "math proof"? That's awesome!

That's Ridiculous, I Don't Wanna Hear About It.

This might be the best headline I've seen in awhile: Jackson Won't Share Bed With Kids Again!

The money quote: Basking in the jurors' decision to acquit his client of all counts, Michael Jackson's lawyer said Tuesday the singer will no longer share his bed with young boys.

As a former colleague of mine once said, "The comedy writes itself."

Okay, I don't see anything wrong with two friends sleeping in the same bed. I think it's sad that we're so oversexualized that we can't have innocent sleepovers anymore and we assume that any friendships that bridge the age gap are sexual and exploitative. It's a product of our age, but that's the way it is. When you live in the spotlight, you get paid for it. But you also pay for it.

On the iPod this morning: The Singles by The Pretenders.

Hot damn, "Talk of the Town" is an unbelievable song. While I still plan on marrying Stevie Nicks, I might have an affair with Chrissie Hynde.

Not Guilty!

Wacko Jacko is a free man!

But that was a close one, I bet he'll think twice before molesting another kid.

Countdown to MJ's Fate...

Twenty-five minutes until we find out if the King of Pop's going to federal POUND ME IN THE ASS prison... (nods to Mike Judge, wow, I didn't know that was him as Chotchke's manager in Office Space. Did you know that?)

My bet, he gets some of the smaller charges, but I don't think there was enough on the charges that he whacked a kid off to send him up the river. We'll see, though.

Forever Young

In a previous blog a coupla months ago (I don't have time to look it up), I totally bitched about the "tweening" of popular culture and how it was gagging me with a spoon. I was listening to "To The Best of Our Knowledge" on Wisconsin Public Radio yesterday, and they had an interview with Marcel Danesi, a University of Toronto professor, who wrote a book on how adolescence is really a Twentieth-Century creation that has been thoroughly exploited by media and corporations because it's profitable, but in the end it's causing social problems by making people who are physically adults act and be treated like children for longer than they should be.

I don't hate kids, I hate that our culture has become in our pandering to the wallets of parents who want to buy more shit for their kids. We need to bring them up to a higher level, rather than bring everyone else's level down. I remember that I hated being "treated like a child" for about as long as I could remember. I wanted to be an adult as fast as I possibly could. And I'm thoroughly enjoying my adulthood. Now, I see that all the adults want to get back to being children. In the words of Korn, "F that. F that."

Danesi's book is called Forever Young: The 'Teen-Aging' of Modern Culture and from the interview it sounds like it illustrates the point I was making pretty well. Go to the website and you can listen to this particular episode of "To The Best of Our Knowledge" in RealAudio. Just click the link at the lower right corner of the page.

It was really a great episode. And if you give a shit, and you should, take a listen. I was gonna buy the book and then I saw that it was $50. Which is a little much to spend on a book just to prove a point, so I'll probably just go to the library. Libraries have changed, man, you can check to see if a book or resource is there, you can even reserve it or order it from another library online, and they'll frickin' call you when the book becomes avaiable. I don't mean to geek out, but that's badass.

Linneman's Pics Are Up!

What a sweaty good time!

No opener, so we did an acoustic set first and then an electric one. It was fun, all of our families came and that's always cool. Since we don't sing nu-metal songs about how much mommy and daddy didn't hug us enough, it turned out pretty well.

Saturday, June 11, 2005

Milwaukee Tonight!

We're back in Beer City tonight, doing what we do best and that's partying, yo!

Linneman's on Locust. We thought there was going to be an opener, but now we're not so sure, so you're gonna get all Sunspot all night!

Byah!

Friday...

When you live in cubicle Hell, just because it's Friday isn't any cause for celebration. You see, when you go through the workweek begging for more time because you can't concentrate on the infintely boring task at hand and then it piles up like a huge out-of-control landfill of monotony, you constantly have that looming over your shoulder even on the weekend. With the guilt that you shouldn't be enjoying yourself, that you should, in fact, be manacled at the ankles to your cube desk, consuming extra-strong coffee as your life ebbs away.

Plus, I just sat for an hour and a half at the DMV. Great googly moogly, that was boring. The only magazines they had were People and Glamour... in fucking Spanish. At least Spanish has cool accent marks, those magazines are drivel in any language.

Oh well, this is why we must rock. As a stand against all things that suck the humanity out of us, rock n' roll makes us feel alive and gives some kind of purpose. You might think that partying isn't a very noble purpose, but isn't it better than staring at a computer screen? Well, if the computer screen has porno, that's different. But I'm talking about work.

On the iPod today: Kiss of Deaf by Straight Outta Junior High.

Their cover of "Total Eclipse of the Heart" is sexcellent.

Woman's Ashes Replaced By Chips

I don't mean to laugh, but when someone steals an urn full of ashes and leaves sour cream and onion chips behind, it's pretty funny.

This happened in Houston, the same city where we were attacked by the dreaded Poop Monster (AKA the Fecal Fiend or the Defecatory Destroyer) who was one of the smelliest vandals we've ever encountered.

Strange things happen in that town. Watch yourself.

Arby's Roast Beef Sale

This article on genital plastic surgery needs no witty comments or responses. Just read and enjoy.

On the iPod today: Weezer's excellent fifth album, Make Believe.

Is it as good as Blue? C'mon, meow. It's really good, though, but it's hard to compare it to an album that has ingrained itself in my consciousness forever. Just listen yourself and enjoy it.

Little girl dies...

...while trying to save a turtle in the middle of the road.

Wow, this story is sad. I mean, really, makes me wanna cry, sad. She was trying to save the turtle from getting run over and got hit herself.

I know the more ice-hearted and black-humored among you wanna make a joke about this. Indeed, I feel it too, almost as a defense against the overwhelming sense about how unfair life is. She was a little innocent girl trying to save the live of a helpless innocent creature, and she gets killed for it.

There is no justice and wonderful human beings die every day for no good reason.

It's sunny in Madison today and I'm sitting in a cube. If I died tonight, would I be happy how I spent my last day?

Pics from Crystal Lake and Stevens Point!

Here's the pics from Friday's show.

Here's the pics from Stevens Point on Saturday.

Body Image Strikes Again

This is a no-brainer, but people who have body image issues try to kill themselves more.

Once again, I'd like to thank Cosmo and Victoria's Secret for making girls think they're unattractive. Your fine work in "selling sex" to sell magazines and fuckin' panties has made American women feel awful about themselves. And the rest of us are left dealing with the emotional impact.

When chicks think they're fat, guys don't get laid. And that, my friends, is the sucky.

Countdown til Madison Smoking Ban

The Madison smoking ban begins on July 1st. It's nice to know that the state cares so much about our health and Dear Leader is watching out for us.

It's sad to watch our city slip more and more into the world of Escape From L.A.

Welcome to the human race.

Voices That Tell You To Kill

Greg Tallard tells the judge that "voices told him to kill" the guy that used to sell him grass. My favorite part, here's what the voices say:

"'You kill Bob Delehanty. We got a $500,000 life policy check.' I had those voices telling me this all the time, those are the voices in my head."

Yeah, I don't think the jury's gonna give you a break if the voices are just being greedy, pal. I've got a little voice in my head that tells me I could score a lot of cash if I rob a bank... I don't fuckin' do it.

If this asshole was smart, he'd say that the voices told him that this Bob Delehanty was an alien and needed to be killed before he conquered the world or some shit like that. At least that gives him a more sympathetic reason than he was looking for a check. Anyway, just a little tip in case you find yourself on a murder rap.

Michael Jackson Thoughts

The MJ Child Molestation Trial is winding down and now the jury's gonna decide The Gloved One's fate. We're all so glib about this whole thing. Do you think the kid woulda been better off to take a settlement? Ya know, he gets $10 million or something in exchange for MJ not going to jail? 10 mil buys a lot of therapy if he really got molested and this whole thing was that traumatic for him. MJ is a weird guy, but I'm gonna give him the benefit of the doubt before I call him a child molester.

I woulda gone for the money so thatlater on when I'm slapping burgers together at McDonald's, I'd be kicking myself for not accepting a gigantor settlement that means I never have to work a day in my life. I bet Jackson would sell that weird amusement park before going to jail.

Had a really good weekend. I'll have a bunch of pics up for everyone up soon. The podcast this week is going to be a lot of fun when you hear what happens when terror strikes the van.

A lot of reminiscing this weekend. That was cool. Not living in the past, necessarily, but celebrating it. I liked that a little, it kicked me in the ass a little bit to realize that I need to work even harder than before. Fuck, I'm not an old man, yet. And I'm way sexier than I used to be to. It's on.

Stevens Point Tonight!

Last night in Crystal Lake was really sweet. They even had Hooters girls working at the beer tent. How deliciously trashy!

Can't wait to party in Stevens Point tonight with M4, who are a very cool group from the area.

Now, it's off to another friend's wedding for the pre-party before the show!

Crystal Lake, IL Festival Tonight!

Haven't updated in the past coupla days because I've been lazy. Saw the Blamm-O!show on Wednesday night at the very cool Slipper Club downtown in Madison. They're a lot of fun and they played a great set.

Tonight, we're gonna be making the trek a coupla hours into Illinois for their Jambalya Festival. Thanks to our good friends from Bound to Change for setting the show up for us. We're going to be with them on June 25th at The Annex right here in Madison. That's gonna be our next home show.

If you're in Madison tonight, check out Fat Sandwich at The Dry Bean. I know a lot of musicians hate The Dry Bean because they're known to fuck over bands, but Fat Sandwich is easily one of Milwaukee's most fun hip-hop/funk acts and they're really great people. There's some other good shows in town tonight (Echo-Static is at the High Noon and the Pale Riders are at the Corral Room if you wanna get your indie fix), but if you're looking to get drunk and dance to a live band that doesn't hit Madison enough, this is the one to check out.
