Another Proud Wisconsin Moment
This Neilsville, WI man has pleaded no contest to charges of having sex with cows.
Now, when people call us "cowfuckers", they'll be correct.
This Bovine Love Hormone victim wasn't even the cows' owner, they were on someone else's farm and they caught him with motion sensors. Isn't that what Ben Dover was in jail for in Fletch Lives? I don't remember.
So, he would stop by for some love after going to a nearby strip club, but if he was compelled to do the hippity dippity with a cow afterwards, what could the strippers have looked like?

Vincent Schiavelli just died, according to CNN. My favorite roles of his were on The X-Files where they visited a town of circus freaks and the the WKRP episode where the guy gets away with all the prize money.
On a trip in 1998, I was listening to the radio and he was being interviewed for writing a cookbook. I thought that was remarkable, because he was so good at being an oddball. Writing a cookbook didn't seem "in character".

Red Sea Show Tonight Cancelled
Due to curcumstances beyond our control, we had to postpone our Red Sea show in Minneapolis tonight. We apologize to everyone involved for the short notice. We're rescheduling the date for 2006.

This almost makes me like her...
...when Michelle Branch tells everyone to fuck off. She's had to jump through a lot of major label hoops to get where she is, so when she says that she'd rather be "folding clothes at a Gap", I think that's kind of bullshit, but it's not the first time I heard someone say that. Kurt Cobain always said that he wished that Nirvana never got bigger than when it was just the band driving through the Northwest. She knew what she was getting into, though, the labels giveth and the labels can taketh away. It's not like everyone is that naive (yes I know about the little thing on naive but I'm too lazy too look right now for the symbol), there's ten million different stories of bands getting screwed by labels and even though artists consider most major label reps to be cockroaches, they did get her "You're everywhere to me" song all over the fucking place a few years back. She got what she wanted, but there's a price with it.
I still like the fact that she gave 'em Hell on her discussion board, though.

Christmas is in like 5 days
The show was pretty good on Thursday. It was fun, but the Cheeseburger in Paradise was a little small for our sound. It was fun party though and Santa's reading the Christmas cards you all wrote right now and he'll scan them in and put up the naughtiest ones on the site later this week.
Even though I think that Christmas commercialism is lame, I still like buying presents for my family, so I'm going to try and get that done this week. I thought I coulda taken care of some of that this weekend, but I took a sabbatical in the HQ and watched The Dukes of Hazzard which was unexpectedly funny, but then I went to King Kong yesterday and that movie was inspiring. As self-indulgent as it was, it really seemed like the filmmakers were just terribly excited to be making a movie, so let's make the biggest, baddest one that we possibly can. It's giddy with itself and that's fun to watch.
I didn't even pay attention to the holiday season this year, but it's already the 19th and the year is almost over. There's only 5 days to buy presents and my time is running out. Plus, Christmas and New Year's are on a weekend this year, that my friends, is totally weak.
I also watched our buddy Jim on Premium Blend on Friday night and I thought he did a pretty good job. He was a little nervous but that's part of his character, though. I think Timmy was correct when he compared him to Steven Wright, he's a funny character comedian. He aimed for some big jokes and I think he hit on a bunch of them. I hope that he gets some more attention from this appearance though. The live tapes I've seen of his really are spectacular.

Alright friends, I know Mike already blogged about tonight's show, but I just had to mention that it is going to be a PARTY with all kinds of fun surprises.
Trust me. I stayed up really late last night making special presents for you good boys and girls!

Have I been negative lately? I was just looking at the blog and fuck man, over the past week I've been kind of a bitch. Sorry.
I'd like to blame it on the cold weather, but really, I've just had some sand in my vagina.
Holy shit, here's some good news, though. One of the guys who used to be on my TV show in college and someone that we reguarly hang out with when we play in Austin, Jim Hamilton, will be on Premium Blend this Friday on Comedy Central.
Congrats Jim! Check out the website for the Premium Blend episode. They have a picture of him and everything. He cut his hair so he doesn't look like a Breck girl anymore, but they have a video bit of his on there too. That's awesome, I'm really looking forward to seeing it.

Tookie
I started a topic over at the Hell Forum yesterday about the execution of convicted murderer, Stan 'Tookie' Williams and I forgot just how strongly people feel about the death penalty.
Yeah, I know, but I hang out mostly with alcoholics.
I was thinking that if we're going to have a death penalty, it should be a public, not a private, event. If the US government is going to kill another citizen in order to "protect" me, I'd like to see my tax dollars in action. It might be a touch morbid, but public executions used to the be par for the course. Why should now be any different? The death penalty is supposed to be punishment and a deterrent, but it doesn't feel very real (for me, particularly, because no one ever gets executed in Wisconsin.)
Executions on television might desensitize some people to the process, but it would also make it real for those who might not grasp the enormity of deciding someone's life or death.
You could even have a "Execution" channel that shows the Gas Chamber's Greatest Hits. We're not surrounded by death like other generations were. Everyone's scared of it, but the process and the gory details which most of us who aren't in the medical or funeral professions lack (but are probably still familiar to underveveloped areas of the world.) Actual, physical death is something most of us don't encounter the hard facts of it until much later on in life. Have you ever seen a dead person outside a funeral home? I haven't and I've never watched a man die (I do love "Folsom Prison Blues", however), but I gotta believe that it makes the fragility of the human experience pretty fucking real for the viewer.
Have you ever watched "Faces of Death"? It's mostly special effects, but it's still disturbing if you think it's real. One time I rented a "Banned on Television" video from the greatest video store in the Midwest, Four Star Video Heaven, and I watched it with my girlfriend at the time thinking it was going to be some tits and ass from Eurotrash TV. But it was just all kinds of gruesome deaths.
Like security cameras from a gas station robbery where the attendant was murdered. Listening to the poor guy all alone as he laid there and the gurgling sound of his blood was so horrifying. That was enough for me, by the time we got to the guy who fell out of a hot air balloon and into a power line, we physically couldn't handle it anymore. Real death is fucking scary and I was totally unprepared for it.
Which makes me feel sorry for these guys who clean up human remains- Aftermath, Inc. I remember when we saw their truck pass us as the band was driving through Chicago one time. "Specializing in suicide, accidents, and dismemberment" I think is what the side of the van said. On their website they list referral fees for funeral directors. Business is business, I guess.
Anyway, I've said this before, I'm not a death penalty kind of guy. But I think that a lot more people would be forced to confront their opinions if they had a closer relationship with death. Seeing a public execution might do the trick, it makes you see exactly what you're agreeing to when you buy into the social contract.

Apparently Nothing
Checked out Apparently Nothing's CD release on Saturday and then went to Mike's house to watch Undead (top 5 worst movies ever) and capped the night off with passing out watching Scary Movie 3. I sometimes get that one confused with Not Another Teen Movie because I saw them both at the same party and things are a little fuzzy. That part in NATM where the chick is taking a dump and falls through the ceiling is classic! Anyway, nice job on the CD, guys and fun show. The Journey is a lot more fun than the Lussier Teen Center. People are a lot nicer and out there having fun instead of trying to be all "I'm so pierced and disturbed"

Is it just me...
...or is Mariah Carey kinda gross-looking lately?
She's just all slutty and bulbous, like the Pillsbury Doughwhore. I dunno, I just lack the vision I guess, to see what Tommy Mottola saw in her. She's all in the news today for getting the Lifetime Achievement award for whoring at the Grammys.
The cold weather this week is starting to get to me. Today, especially. It's hard to feel great about everything when it's fuckin' nasty outside. The shitty Wisconsin weather gets to me more and more every year. Now I know why old people move to Florida. Why waste your years of your life scraping your fucking windshield?
I'm looking forward to the Christmas Party for the Ringin' A Bell CD next week, though. I kinda think that Christmas is bullshit, since most people don't give a shit about church anymore. So, what's the point? Why go through the motions if you're not a believer? Why go to church one day of the year? Tradition? Are you keeping some guilty memory alive?
I'm not saying that the world is full of hypocrites, but it is.
Well, then, Christmas should be about family and generosity. That's bullshit too. Every day should be about family and generosity, you don't need some fucking sale at Kohl's to remind you that you should be good to the people you care about.
Christmas isn't even supposed to be the big Christian holiday, Easter is (not that a Virgin Birth isn't a miracle, but rising from the dead after three days takes that cake, I think.) We just made it that way because we want people to buy more shit. We need an excuse to get them to buy more shit, so here comes Santa Claus.
I dunno, I think the holidays should be for the people who really get something out of it, the people who really believe in something. Not for the rest of us who feel some social obligation to buy shit.
I'm not hating just to hate (except for that Mariah Carey part, but I enjoyed that), but if you're going to do something shouldn't you really go for it? If you're going to do a religious holiday, wouldn't it be freeing and wonderful if you actually believed in something that has to do with that religious holiday for more than one day a year?
Why is so much of life going through the motions? We do it because other people expect us to? So, we rule our lives around other people's expectations? Isn't that kind of fucked up?

At the Memorial Union there's Something 2 Do, Sunshine Policy, and Mustard Plug. Man, there's not a lot of ska bands around anymore. There was a time when half the bands in Madison used to skank.
The Dammitheads are at the Angelic with Bascom Hill.
PINE and John Masino Band are playing at The Klinic.
It's a good night to party. I just hope I don't piss myself.

Art Paul can sue the D?
As I shuffle through the day, Art Paul's song "One Note" comes on, and I think to myself, "isn't this the exact same thing as 'One note Song' by the mighty Tenacious D but without the ridiculous 'do you think some people are robots' discussion?"
The answer is yes, in theory, at least. I wasn't able to find a date on Art Paul's recording except that it's on The Best of Art Paul Schlosser, which is from just a coupla years ago.

Good News For Quagmire...

However, this article on a former Canadian minister of defence discussing the serious need for a panel to talk about relations with extraterrestrials certainly piques my interest. The fact that he talks about Roswell like it's a certainty and that the Bush Administration is building a forward base on the moon make the guy sound a little off-his-rocker.
But that's what they want you to believe.
It's nice to see the subject taken seriously, though.

This hot tamale is going to spend three years under house arrest for doing it with her student. Check her out. This kid is going to tattle on that? You know the only reason he told anybody is so that he could sue the school district (either that or she stopped putting out.) Now, her life is ruined. Yeah, I know that she's fucked up to make a judgment call as bad as this when the laws are the way they are and we hold on to the surreality of adolescence, so she's obviously got some problems. I apologize that I was so unhelpful at the end of the night. Everybody who helped pack up my stuff: I owe you big time! Seriously. I guess my lack of dinner and sleep added some punch to ALL OF THOSE SHOTS people bought me! Oops.
By the way... I don't have my phone. It's in my duffle bag which is... uh.... anybody seen my green duffle bag? I think it's in the van. heh.

The doors for general admission open at 9 and the cover will be only $5 for the show (we'll have CDs and all the new merch available tonight for general admission too), we still have a couple advance tickets left so you can still make it to the VIP party before the music starts. Let us know as early as possible, though, so we can reserve the materials and order more food for you.
I'm really excited, I finally got to see the finished product yesterday and it's f'in hot!

You Can't Live In The Past
Night Stalker is cancelled after only six episodes were broadcast. The X-Files were the real successor to the Kolchak series, but it seems the paranormal conspiracy drama is a little tired now (I'm still a sucker for them, but it was a very 90's thing.) We'll need some distance before we can get into it again. I feel bad for Stuart Townshend, he can't get a break. He lost the Aragorn role in Lord of the Rings and now his show got cancelled. Someone get him a cookie. Stat.
Not that supernatural shit isn't in. Everyone I know talks about Lost all the time. I haven't had time to really get into a show. I usually save it for The Sopranos, that's the one I don't miss an episode of. Anyway, as a fan of the old Darren McGavin Night Stalker, I'll probably finally catch this one when they run it on Sci-Fi.

Good News
#1- The new albums have shipped, they're finished and on their way.
#2- Capital Brewery is officially sponsoring the release party and there's free beer for the advanced ticket holders from 8-9.
#3- Some of the new Sunspot swag has arrived with more on the way, meaning that we'll get all new gear for the new disc's arrival.
Hot shit. That's three great reasons to like Monday this week.

Friday night was a shining example of Madison at its lowest. Allison and I went out for our friend Chris's birthday and started out at what I remember as being one of the fun places to hang out downtown--the Vintage. Usually, the jukebox is sweet and the atmosphere is pretty chill. Not the case that evening. Swarmed by frat boys dancing to "Whatcha gon' do with all that junk? All that junk inside your trunk," I was unable to obtain a drink for about 20 minutes. Overcharged and undermixed, I dropped some of the contents on the gyrating herd of over-cologned Abercrombie mannequins in between me and the table. After like an hour of not being able to hear the birthday girl talk over "This shit is bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S!" we trotted over to the Lava Lounge. Regrettably. I haven't liked that place since the bartender dateraped our friend. After being overcharged for two martinis, they called last call and immediately started screaming rudely at people to get out. The ladies were unable to finish even half of their drinks. To finish off the experience, an obviously underaged , highly intoxicated, probably-Iowa-cheering boy bumped into Allison and knocked her purse off her shoulder. I politely said, "Hey dude, careful" or something like that. His friend goes, "Wow, make a big deal out of it" and sticks his middle finger right in her face.
Next time, I'm going to Brothers. Mark knows how to treat people and keep the party rollin. Should have gone to Bros.

Dammitheads at The Klinic Tonight
Our good friends in The Dammitheads are playing tonight at The Klinic on South Park St.
If you like Spoon, you'll definitely like these guys. I'm listening to their new album, The Heart of the Matador right now and it sounds great.
Before that, I'm gonna check out Bif Naked at Club Majestic. I wrote up an interview with her in this month's Maximum Ink. Anyway, she was fun to talk to and there's a coupla good tracks on her album, so I wanna check it out. She's opening for Default, but I don't know anything really about them except that "Wasting My Time" song which was a little too nu-metal for me.
Plus, I think Oxford and Crimson Vim are at The Annex tonight (that's what Uncle Timmy told me, but I'm too lazy to go to the website now.) Anyway, there's a lotta good shit going on tonight, so I can't wait to go out.

Will MySpace Get Screwed?
In this news story, a high school practically shuts down because four kids made threats on MySpace.
The school district official quoted in the article MySpace.com will be held "accountable".
For what? For not monitoring the content that some asshole teenagers wrote on a website that has over a million members? How are they going to do that? I hope their advertising model is successful, because if MySpace gets sued and goes out of business, thousands of bands across the country are going to lose their sites.
I know that everyone and their brother constantly exaggerates the importance of MySpace (once these friend networks get too massive (as many are already getting), then its usefulness as a networking tool will probably end) but it's the first networking site that everyone in a band knows and uses. And it's cool that you can get the skinny on a band quickly, instead of wafting through pages of Flash intros and splash pages (which makes me want to leave a site quickly instead of explore it.) It's a good concept and it's successful, but I don't know if they're making any money, a well-timed lawsuit might destroy MySpace just as quickly as it ascended.
Grokster was shut down today by some corporate lawyers and their satanic masters at the RIAA. And Grokster didn't have central servers (like dearly departed, Napster did. So now, legally the RIAA can shut not only the act of piracy down, but the vehicle through which that piracy travels. It's like the police shutting down a car dealership because those cars might carry stolen merchandise. We live in interesting times, the RIAA is pulling a Thomas Edison and suing people because it buys them the time they need to put together a new business plan that will work in the Digital Age.
Oh well, I just hope that the geniuses at this school district decide to go after the parents before they go after a website.

I realize that they have the right to regulate intrastate commerce, but why? Who does this serve? The consumer, by making prices more expensive? The small brewery, by driving down their profits?
Competition is good. Distributors and breweries can do a lot of great things (i.e., get us more drunk) when they work together, but why does the legislature have to mandate any of this? What do we have to do to get these people off our backs?

More Halloween Fun
Here's an article from CNN on Madison's Halloween arrests this weekend.
Caveman Dan had a good suggestion when we were talking yesterday that maybe the bars should be open all night on Halloween like they are on New Year's Eve. Look, you can't stop the people from coming... they cancelled the Mifflin Street Block Party in 1997, but now it's as buck wild as it ever was, well, almost as buck wild.
But if you can't stop people from coming then you have to work with the inevitable. Elminating bar time on Halloween is one way to handle that. Eliminating bar time completely is a pipe dream, unfortunately.

Podcasts, CD release parties
I tried to do a quick podcast yesterday, but CastBlaster kinda sucks. We've never gotten it to work correctly. I haven't heard Adam Curry talk about it for awhile, and that's because I think he doesn't use it anymore.
I dunno, maybe I'll d/l the new version. But because we've been so busy and haven't had time to podcast anything, doesn't mean we've stopped, it just means that we've been working full tilt on the record. I mean, I brought my iTalk on a few of our adventures this month, but I didn't have time to put something together. Yesterday, I just tried to do one quick and say hi, but when I finished there was no recording on there. Crapola. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow. Maybe I'll download the new version of CastBlaster, too. Audacity is okay for multitrack stuff, but I can't get it to do what I want it to do (which is record a mix of multiple inputs of audio at once live and not have to edit it later.) How difficult can that fuckin' be? Apple has GarageBand.

Man, there's a lot of good shit going on tonight.
There's the Madison Music Project Party that's going to be at The Barrymore Theatre with Natty Nation, Lorenzo's Music, and The Selfish Gene (time to get a webpage!) That's cool because it's a celebration of the local scene.
At the Orpheum, there's The Decemberists. They've got one of those awful indie names, but they've got some funny, bawdy, and cool songs. They're real hip right now, so it might be fun.
For those who want to laugh, you know I love Schaffer the Darklord, he's back in town and at The Annex tonight. He's awesome.
And finally, one of my favorite bands, The Von Ehrics, are at the High Noon tonight. They're not just alt-country, they pull the great structures and humour from country with no-fucking around punk rock. We played a show with them in Michigan last year and had an awesome time, they're truly the balls.
Wen and I are gonna try to hit at least 2 outta the 4, if not more.

Man...
...where does all this mucous come from? I have the runniest nose in history and I don't know where my body is storing all this disgusting mucous.
It's like ectoplasm coming out of nowehere, just oozing from my nose, and it doesn't stop. Man, colds can totally kiss my B's.
On another note, we've been quite delinquent on the podcast lately because we've been working out little tushies off to make sure that our new disc kicks ass and we've also been drinking heavily lately, so that hasn't helped. Anyway, as soon as we all get together we'll do one. I've got some stuff recorded from a coupla weeks ago that's fun too, so we'll see what happens.
Speaking of heavy, check out the pic they used for this story on an obesity "vaccine". It's cool they're doing the research in Wisconsin, though. Our fatasses need all the help they can get.

What a horrible way to go.I remember always feeling bad for him that he got fired from SNL for cursing on the air, you'd think more people would get fired for being unfunny, but alas, no.

More Scum and Villainy...
Remember I wrote about that story last year where those guys killed a woman maybe a half-mile from Sunspot HQ? Well, at least one of those assholes is going to spend the rest of his life in prison.
So, one of their kidnapping victims, who was bound so tightly that he lost his arms, was in the court for the trial. Can you imagine looking someone in the face who robbed you of your hands and forearms? I would pay someone on the inside to torture and brutally murder that guy in prison. Well, maybe if I could afford it. Is that so bad? Who was heartbroken when Jeffery Dahmer got his? Fuck, the Femmes even wrote a song about it, and in case you don't know, the Violent Femmes kick ass.
We could always just send these guys to Texas where I'm sure Johnny Law would have no problem extracting revenge. I guess I'm sheltered enough that violent crime seems very distant. I hope to keep it like that.

Tres Amigos
I had a coupon for this restaurant on Odana Road so I gave it a try for lunch today.
I was at Pedro's last night and the service was atrocious, half-off margaritas, my ass.
I thought the food and the service were both excellent at Tres Amigos. As good or better than Laredo's (when you're looking for more authentic Mexican food, rather than Mexi-American.) A nice hot salsa too, I hate when they puss it down.
The ambience is unusual for a Mexican joint (it used to be a hip-hop club and I don't think they've redecorated it.) But I dug it, I'll definitely go back.

Anyway, I lived with a guy who used to party with that girl and he didn't trust her either. Not that he was a great guy, he still owes me money from the energy bill in La Crosse, that son of a bitch. I called his parents too, to get the money one time and they said it's not their problem.

Anyway, I'll never root for them, but I hope I get invited to party with the Vikings sometime.

You have to be...
...a serious piece of shit to go around killing old ladies. I hope they find this guy (probably a guy, he's a serial killer, not that I'm saying women can't be, but they're usually not) and do something horrible to him. Maybe he'd like that, I don't know how to punish someone like that except to get them out of human society as quickly as possible before they can do anything else horrible.
Obviously, you always want to extract vengeance on someone when they do something so awful. Like when they dragged those Americans through the streets of Fallujah last year, didn't some part of you want to see those people die in the most painful way possible? Doesn't it stir a little thirst for blood? It sure as fuck did in me.
But what does it do except for continue a nasty cycle? I'm sure the children of those butchers in Fallujah would grow up with the vengeful desire to kill more Americans if we slaughtered their fathers. When does it end? Even if they deserve to die, is it our job to make it happen? Can we even pretend to understand justice? Or are we all just fooling ourselves. People that are 'good' do bad things all the time. Why don't they deserve punishment? Why is one murder better than another?
Sorry, I'm falling into relativism. I probably need some coffee.

I dunno, I'm thinking about this serial killer in Mexico. I don't think he's part of the circle of violence, he's probably a sociopathic aberration that needs to be stopped. We just recorded and mixed it last week and now it's available for public consumption. Of course, the CD will be available in the next month or so, pick up a copy for some holiday tunes that you won't get ANYWHERE else and help out a great cause.
It's getting cold here in Madison and a lot of less fortunate people need a place to stay and a little help putting their lives back together. The Salvation Army of Dane County does that every day. Let's help them out.

Real World in Madison!
Damn, I was out of town when MTV came around Madison casting for the next season of Real World.
Yes, I think the show sucks, but this season in Austin all the people have been doing is getting super drunk and hooking up, so I'd at least like a shot at it.
Danny is just another Massachusetts douchebag like Bawston Rob from Survivor, don't even ask me how he got with unbelievably needy but super-hot Melinda (who's from Germantown, WI, oh yeah!) Whatever, Rob got with Amber too. Assholes get girls, it's a law of nature. You'd hope that these guys were funny or something, but no, they're just assholes.
I think the biggest asshole I've ever met who always got good-looking girls was this dude from North Prairie I went to high school with, let's just call him J.F. (I just tried googling him but to no avail.) After graduation, he switched teams (not that there's anything wrong with that), so, HUGE SURPRISE, all that asshole-ishness was just self-loathing in disguise! Wow, I just used two Seinfeld analogies in a row, I'm dating myself (I wish I was dating myself, because I'd be a cheap date, ba-dum-bum.)
Anyway, it's nice to see that the MTV producers have boiled down The Real World into a nice concise young-hot-post-adolescents-boozing-and-fucking formula that is absolutely value-less. We're allowed to project our own morals on the characters, which comes down usually to either thinking that they're morally disgusting and watch anyway or envying their good looks and carefree-post-AIDS sex lives. I think I do a little of both.

World's Greatest Beer Coaster
The fine people of Germany have now invented a beer coaster that lets the bar know that your glass is empty. The article headline is "Now You Never Have To Stop Drinking", which I got all excited about because I thought they had invented an artificial liver that could take over for the weak and puny human liver that will eventually fail you if you party all the time. But no, it's just an intelligent drink coaster, which is kinda cool, but those of us that know how to party never have an empty glass anyway.
I rest my case.
We finished mixing the album last night and got some sweet sounds. We mixed our last tunes with Eric from Raw-Tracks and I have to say, he did a great job. He's got an awesome ear for mixing. I wouldn't hesitate to take any projects to him or recommend him to anyone looking to make the mix they got in the studio sound even better.
I also went in and finished the mix for our song on the upcoming Ringin' A Bell Salvation Army Christmas CD last night. Thanks to Chris Kasper and Good n' Loud Music for donating their time and resources to the project.
We're off to see the Wizard, Trevor, at Mastermind Productions for mastering tonight in Milwaukee and the audio part of the CD is fin. It's go time on this baby and I can't wait to get it in people's hands.
For those of you hanging around in Madison tonight, make sure you stop by The Klinic tonight to see our awesome friends in Sugarfuse tonight. I think the show starts at around 8:30. Those guys are sweet and their music is a ton of fun and drinks are so cheap at the Klinic. You're gonna fuckin' dig it!

It's Good To Be The Doctor
This doctor claimed that sex with him would cure his patient's lower back pain and now she's suing him. We can get into medical ethics all you want (another contradiction in terms, how we can call any industry that charges people $10,000 a day to stay in a hospital "ethical" is ridiculous to me) but what I really want to know is, did the prescription work?

New Disc Nearing Completion...
We finished our last tracking last night for our new recording and I'm really excited about it. A lot of you have heard these songs live and I think you're gonna gonna dig some of the sounds we got on the record. We should be done mixing and mastering by the end of this week.

No sleep til Verona
Wow, we were at the recording studio last night until after 1. My eyes almost wouldn't stay open to see the van suck down about $15 worth of gas just to get back to the west side. Anyway, the new song for the Salvation Army compilation is almost done and it's for a good cause, so it will be worth it in the long run, particularly when we get some more sleep so we can enjoy it. Thanks to everyone that was at Octoberfest and Dogtoberfest the past few days. They said they raised $1500 at Capital for the pet victims, so that's cool cuz the dogs are really cute.

Harvest Fest
Harvest Fest is tomorrow and it's one of Madison's more unique events.
It's a Badger home game at 11am, so that means State Street will be flooded with fans looking to get wasted after the game right around 3 o'clock and that's right when the marijuana legalization parade is set to begin. Stoners and jockos finally coming together and joining forces to get wasted.

We're home safe!
It was a quick roll through Chicago and we're back in Madison.
However, Don Adams of Get Smart is dead. That was one of my favorite shows. I even enjoyed The Nude Bomb and would you believe I even liked the mid-90's Fox revival?
He was also in a show in the 80's called Check It Out that was syndicated (back when there were a bunch of syndicated sit-coms that would play on weekend afternoons.) I thought its mean-spiritedness was actually a little ahead of its time (Married... With Children was still two years away by that point.)
Anyway, we'll miss you Don.

Miramar Tonight!
Looking forward to our show in Milwaukee tonight. I really dig the Miramar Theatre, it always has such a cool vibe. The last thing I saw there was Todd Robbins' Carnival Knowledge which is one of America's last touring sideshows and it was awesome. It's a show as well as a lesson in American history and we had a killer time there for my sister's birthday last September.
We'll be up first around 9 o'clock, so make sure to come down, have a drink at the Mirabar and listen to Sunspot "in the round" for the first time ever. Metallica did it on their last tour (and the Black album tour if I remember correctly) tonight we're gonna try, except no rotating stage...uhhh... so someone's gonna get a good view of our backsides. The best "seats" in the house.
I'm fucking lame.

WAMI Tonight
It's the first WAMI meeting of the season is tonight. I always wonder why nobody else from Madison makes the super short drive (less than 70 miles on I-94) to Milwaukee for meetings. I think the networking is valuable, even if don't meet that many bands in our genre, it's cool to see like-minded musicians who have the right idea going forward. I don't think our formula is that different than anyone else's, no matter what the genre. Write good songs. Rock out. Get paid. Party. Repeat.
Even though, there's a lot more pop artists gunning for the Dawson's Creek /O.C. audience in Milwaukee than in Madison. I think I only know one band here that's going really for the Top 40 crowd, but there's a lot in Milwaukee. I wonder why that is. And people at WAMI meetings don't usually moan about how the music scene "sucks". I think the music scene sucks everywhere, yo, that's why you have to make your own. There's very few genres that you can just plug yourself into. You make your own crowd and don't depend on anyone or anything else. Always.
It's not just your job to kick ass. It's your job to let everyone know how much ass you kick. Everybody's a rockstar in the basement and that's cool. But if you want to have great shows, you need to do some kind of promotion to make it happen. It seems like most bands in Madison think it's someone else's job.
Anyway, I better make some fliers for our Friday 9/16 rock show at The Miramar on the East Side of Milwaukee so we can hand them out tonight. It's gonna be a good party.

Help Close To Home
Here's what I mean about people needing to look and see what needs cleaning in their backyard. Looks like the Sauk County homeless shelter is closing.
First of all, how do you end up homeless in Sauk County? I doubt there's a lot of transients (but I still find transients more terrifying than pitiful.) What I bet is that it's a lot of families and teenagers running from abusive homes. There really might be nowhere for these people to go unless they make it to Dane County or Stevens Point. Which is really hard if you lack a car. I mean, it's kind of the middle of nowhere. 500 people have stayed there since the beginning of the year. I'd probably think of that area as a place with no homeless at all. I was wrong.
While most of our national resources and attention goes to hurricane victims (and of course they need and deserve as much help as we all can give), maybe we should have a benefit for the people who are up shit creek only twenty miles away.

Here's a cool story about scientists in the UK working on creating a human parthenogenesis (reproduction without sex.) The main idea of this was to cultivate stem cells in a less controversial way (ie, without fertilizing eggs.)
Just the idea that we're approaching the technical knowledge that we can alter the ways that life is created is fascinating to me and completely amazing. We're on the threshold of an ability that humans only attributed to gods. Even if we question the morality, it's nice to enjoy the pride in achievement. Plus, Frankenstein's the balls.

Mention in Mix Magazine
It's just a teeny mention, but it's cool that Mix printed a little blurb about us recording for the Raw-Tracks.com site.
I'm back from Dallas, I didn't have much time to hang out or party unfortunately. But I did see a lot of refugees from Hurricane Katrina that were sent to the Dallas Convention Centers. These people really have nothing left, I'd say give if you can. But don't forget there's people right in our backyard that need help every day. Just because CNN doesn't have a special about them, doesn't mean they're any less important.

St. Cloud Show Tonight

Christmas CD for Salvation Army
Just a heads-up. The website for Ringin' A Bell, a benefit CD for the Dane County Salvation Army just went up this past week. We'll have a holiday tune on there. There are some cool local acts and businesses helping out with the disc as well. Stop by the site to check it out.
Speaking of contributing, I'm sure there will be a lot of benefits and opportunities to give now in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. It's an opportune time to call your Red Cross and give some blood. It's easy, fast, and you get free cookies.

Awesome Time Last Night
I just wanted to give a deepfelt thanks to everyone for making last night such an excellent show. It was great seeing so many friends make it out on a Wednesday. We'll have some pictures up from last night's show and this last weekend's events very soon.
Reason For Leaving put on a really fun set (absolutely nice guys and talented), the bartenders were very cool and the free beer lasted until almost the end of our set, nice job on making short work of it, yo!

Stone's Throw Re-Opens Tonight!
Tonight we're at The Stone's Throw in Eau Claire for their grand re-opening! If you're anywhere near, you gotta stop down, it's going to be friggin' sweet.
Also, we'll be appearing on WYS Radio, Eau Claire's newest all-independent radio station to talk about the show tonight.
Tomorrow is a jello wrestling party at 324 Live in La Crosse. Hot! We'll have to moblog some pics. Byah!

Who's Messing With Maiden?
Looks like these asshole fans need a smackdown for throwing eggs and lighters at Iron Maiden during their show in San Bernadino, California. Plus, Sharon Osbourne calls Bruce Dickinson a "prick" onstage?
Here's a review of what happened from the Orange County Register:
"Undoubtedly, Iron Maiden was the highlight of the entire event at Glen Helen Pavilion in Devore and one of the few - and I mean few - bands on the bill that has a singer. Bruce Dickinson, who along with Ronny James Dio, Rob Halford of Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne, is among the few frontmen in metal who can keep an audience on its feet for the entire set. And with an incredible band that includes Steve Harris (bass), Dave Murray (guitar), Adrian Smith (guitar), Janick Gers (guitar) and Nicko McBrain (drums), Maiden is the consummate metal act.
Unfortunately for Maiden, and its fans, things were not rosy in metal land. During the day, each band that performed was introduced by an emcee. However, Iron Maiden was the only band that did not have an intro. Instead, the only thing that could be heard over the P.A. system before the band came on was a loud, obnoxious voice screaming 'Ozzy, Ozzy, Ozzy.'
And when the band members opened up the set with 'Murders in the Rue Morgue,' they were pelted with eggs, bottle caps and ice that came from one specific area of the pit. And from there, the evening got worse.
In the next song, 'Trooper,' Dickinson came onstage with the British flag, as he has always done when the group performs this number. But near the end of the song, someone walked out from stage left and started to wave an American flag. On his back was written 'Don't (mess) with Ozzy.' After being hustled off stage, the man appeared again with the flag, waving it again near the front of the stage. Besides this incident, there were power outages, in which the P.A. system was switched off in key moments of three of the band's songs. In addition, while Dickinson was speaking to the audience at the end of the band's encore, that same voice came on the P.A. yelling for Ozzy. But Maiden fans drowned it with chants of 'Maiden.'
Frustrating? Yes. And it was apparent in Dickinson and the band's demeanor. At one point, Dickinson exclaimed, 'You'll never hear Maiden on U.S. radio, MTV and certainly never see them in a reality show.'
Nevertheless, Iron Maiden kept its cool the best it could, and delivered an outstanding 60-minute set, which apparently the Ozzfest organizers had told the band to keep to 55 minutes. Despite all these distractions and problems, what stuck out the most was Sharon Osbourne's appearance on stage after Maiden finished its set.
One might have thought Osbourne was going to apologize to Iron Maiden and do some damage control, but instead, the moment took on some heavy metal drama. She told the audience that Ozzfest organizers 'absolutely loved Iron Maiden and their crew and they are all wonderful, but their singer, Bruce Dickinson was a (jerk) and had disrespected Ozzfest since they began their stint with the tour.'
At this, many in the audience started to boo Sharon Osbourne. While the shenanigans were very weird, one has to wonder how anybody could have sneaked in the approximately two dozen eggs that were hurled at the band. And how someone can gain access to the back stage is anybody's guess. "
