Holy shit. At first glance, you read the headline and think "How trite. Hope the bitch loses. Big deal, she's ugly." But then you read the article, and... well, I'm completely depressed, and I totally agree with you Mikey. I heard from Matt Hoffman of Shooting Blanks (punk band, Chicago) when he was on Average Joe (not sure if he got on the air or not, they may have just cut him out) that they really press you to say controversial stuff. But he's too laid back for that, so they didn't like him. In REAL reality, most people just aren't extremely interesting. At least not as interesting as fictional tv characters (especially sci-fi!). Ya know? So they made this family talk shit about this poor woman who was finally getting the chance to look normal, because Americans wouldn't be as entertained if they said NICE things like "She's beautiful on the inside. I don't think she needs this makeover." You know, things you'd ACTUALLY say to your family because you love them. You can delude yourself and believe that looks aren't that important, but that's complete bullshit. It's hardwired in our genes that we look up to and long to be, or be with, the best looking people. (Until you find out what their personality is like, usually!... sorry, pretty folk.) And this woman was given the dream to change her looks (and they were honestly really bad) and then had it taken away by television producer fuckin' pricks. Would you give someone a fake winning Megabucks ticket, just to get some laughs? No, unless you're a complete asshole. I know they make fake ones for a few hundred bucks, and that's not as bad, but still not cool. I don't think I would talk shit about my family no matter how much money I was given, but then again, if you KNEW (or was under the impression) that they were getting this life altering makeover that would boost their confidence, you might go along with the pricks and rib 'em a little, right? I might. In good fun. Although, with editing, I'm sure they would've made the family look like they HATED this woman because of her ugliness, because hate gets good ratings. This article made me wanna barf up my Laredo's. Fuck reality TV. I hope she wins enough to get the surgeries. I mean, YES people are dying from hurricanes and the country is in a shambles, but that doesn't mean this story doesn't deserve compassion, too. Man, oh man.
I agree that it's sad, Tim. Especially that her sister killed herself. I sympathize for her.
But why aren't people taking any kind of responsibility for their own lives? We think these faceless corporations are running rampant and ruining our lives like we don't have a choice, like it's a fucking Nazi pointing a gun to our head.
It's not, though. No one is pointing guns to our heads, no one is forcing us to do anything. We're doing it to ourselves through the choices we make. Dues Ex Machina is not going to happen. No one is going to save us from the bad decisions we make. If we don't take care of ourselves, no one else will. And if we never get out of that mindset, then we deserve what we get.
Good point, also. Obviously there was something emotionally wrong with her sister in the first place, or she would never have gone to such extreme measures. I feel really bad about the time I hit my brother Dan on the head with a huge rock when we were little, but I wouldn't kill myself over it. And really we can't say that the evil corporation is at fault, or the sister and her family for going along with the "shit-talking", because we're not there and don't have all the details. I tend to think all corporations are greedy and evil (just the way I am, I guess!) so maybe I'm biased a little. I do think people should be responsible for their actions, but you and I, and most of our friends are REALLY smart and educated people. We have the mental capacity to think in a rational manner before we act. And truthfully, a LOT of people in this country are, well, really stupid. It's not nice to say, but it's true. And sad. That's where corporations have a responsibility for their actions. When dealing with idiots. haha.
